Horizons
James Hunting
Stephanie and I entered teaching after each having independent careers in the textile world. We decided upon the common theme of ‘Horizon’ as we both felt that our own horizons had been challenged and altered through the discussions and mutual support sessions during our daily commute along the south coast rail line, itself perpendicular to the horizon formed by the sea and the sky.
We worked independently, although with regular telephone contact, and both committed to recording our personal journeys through sketch and notebooks. We have different methods of working, but the respect we hold for our own commitment to the learning experience has enabled us to question methods and outcomes and look at our perceptions around the horizons we create and impose on ourselves and our students.
On a personal level horizons represent the non-existent yet visible lines of as yet unrealised experiences and potentials; they are imaginary points in our life that we fix upon, they are goals and directions we can choose to ignore or to pursue.
My piece of work explores the compelling attraction I feel to examine the nebulous concepts and the emotional intensity I experience when regarding the limitless space represented by the contained, controlled line of the horizon.

Creative dialogues with James on the early morning 7.32 train into work at Chichester College have been life changing. These dialogues have been honest, open and sometimes brutal. They have provided guidance, support and above all inspiration. Now living over three hundred miles apart has meant that our creative exchanges are carried out via email, phone calls and meeting up every couple of months. I do miss the intimacy of our train journeys and it was important that my work for this exhibition conveyed the significance and importance of those journeys, by working on the individual pieces on the train whenever I could.
For over twenty years I had worked as a commercial textile designer and colourist for both the fashion and furnishing industries and now teaching combined with family life meant that my creative energies had been directed elsewhere.
One hundred horizons represent new beginnings – they are one hundred creative horizons and incorporate my passions for colour, pattern, print and stitch. Doodle muses that explore the potential of simple primitive making of marks – ideas and inspiration for future work.
