Held: What We Carry with Sue Green Somerset Art Weeks

Textile Study Group member Sue Green and friend of the TSG Alice Crane are exhibiting together in Somerset this autumn. Taking place as part of Somerset Art Weeks, the show features a series of stunning new installation pieces intricately stitched by Sue. Held: What We Carry Venue 37 | Cotley Tithe Barn, Chard

Held: What We Carry is a collaborative textile and mixed-media installation by Sue Green and Alice Crane, developed with artist Lucy Brown, exploring belonging, migration, identity and memory.

Drawing on the knowledge, memories and materials of a community, the artists invite participation in new site-responsive work created within the evocative setting of Cotley Tithe Barn. Participation centres around two intimate questions: What treasured object fits in your hand or pocket? What would you carry to remind you of home?

The artists share a practice grounded in reuse, collecting and transformation. Through textiles, painting, found materials and personal artefacts, the installation reveals hidden narratives connected to labour, care, movement and home.

Together the artists combine distinct approaches, creating a participatory installation that connects contemporary communities with shared cultural histories.

Throughout Somerset Art Weeks, visitors are invited to experience HELD through a series of free events at Cotley Tithe Barn, Chard (Venue 37). Meet the artists at the HELD Tea Party (Sunday 20 September, 2–4pm), explore the exhibition, and discover traditional spinning, weaving, rag rug making, and other heritage textile crafts during the HELD Heritage Craft Demonstrations (19–24 September and 30 September – 4 October, all day). Together, these events celebrate creativity, shared stories, and the connections between people, place, and tradition.
