The 2015 Graduate of the Year was Rebecca Hardie from Duncan of Jordanstone College, in Dundee. All three prize winners came from the same college – what an accolade for the Textile Design Course leader, Dr Frances Stevenson, as well as the graduates themselves. Rebecca was awarded a BA (Hons) Textiles.
Rebecca’s working reference is the urban landscape. Her colour palette is restrained and has a modern, rather cool, sleek elegance about it – these designs are definitely from a 20th century urban environment. Her folio was extensive and very impressive in the breadth of research and approaches, her designs and their applications. The textiles Rebecca creates are for home interiors, and her abstracted designs are printed onto a variety of cloths, including linen, fine felt and silk. She uses a minimal amount of stitch to enhance or give emphasis. This sparing use of the marks in thread gives great importance to the stitches – definitely a case of ‘less is more’.
