The Textile Study Group

Siân Martin

Artist Statement

A lifelong textile artist, I graduated from Birmingham Polytechnic in 1972 with a BA and MA in Embroidery. I'm an honorary member of the 62 Group of Textile Artists, and I also exhibit with the Stitch Textile Artists and the Textile Study Group.

My work explores ways to convey movement and layering, joining multiple shapes to create illusions of motion. Using cloth, paper, natural materials, and threads, I'm inspired by the landscapes of my home in Somerset, particularly the wetlands. My pieces connect the natural beauty of the area with themes of conservation.

I earned my Art Teachers Diploma from the University of Leicester. I enjoy teaching others to experiment with textiles and offer workshops and lectures both in the UK and internationally. For 30 years, I was the director and tutor of 'Distant Stitch,' an online embroidery course. I now mentor a small group of textile artists near Bath.
