2018- PROCESSIONS

Mass participation event. 10th June 2018, London procession, women’s march, celebrating 100 years of women’s suffrage commissioned by 14-18NOW and produced by ARTICHOKE UK.

Somerset Art Works commissioned artist, Dorcas Casey, to lead Strode College Textiles students and several community members, in collaboration for the event exhibiting 100 banners in total, created across the UK, to celebrate the cause. Our banner featured hand stitch, appliqué and an embroidered slogan, ‘Make More Noise’ emblazoned across the 3 metre panel. Delving into feminist history and discussing cultural issues we developed our design together.

The banner was exhibited at Glastonbury’s Rural Life Museum in 2018 after the procession with Somerset’s original Suffragette banner from 1918. A very fitting pairing! It has also been exhibited at the UK Textiles Biennale in Preston and images published as part of the 100 banners collection.
