Summer School 2011: Landscape of Life

Locating and Abstracting

This course will take students on a journey of discovery, possibly and hopefully into unknown places and spaces. The structured beginning to the course will introduce students to processes and techniques in mixed media using paper, fabric and stitch, culminating in a sketchbook full of ideas and the tools and confidence to develop these in a personal way. Inspirational sources will be provided for simple introductory sessions, but will also come from the ‘locating’ and ‘abstracting’ of an idea rather than from the safety of any particular design source. You will gain understanding of the importance and relevance of testing an idea which can lead you to surprising outcomes. You will also learn from looking at the work of other artists how abstract ideas grow and you will be guided in how to use these newly found skills to produce your own individual textile work or series of smaller pieces.
